Toston Castle

 

The history of the castle or tower defense begins in the fifteenth century with the conquest of the island by the Spanish crown, becoming a bastion to defend the coast from frequent pirate attacks Berber (North African), English and French.
After the conquest, El Cotillo acquired great importance as a natural harbor for trade orchilla, cereals and livestock. This anchorage was known since 1599 as the Port of Roque. Beginning in 1626 acquired the name of Puerto del Toston to derive its present name, "El Cotillo" from mid-twentieth century.
This castle was built on the ruins of the old castle defense (Rico Roque), and was created to defend the port of El Cotillo, which was very important for trade in cochineal, grain and livestock.

 

The tower was built in 1700 with stones from a cave near El Cotillo. It has a drawbridge and at the top were set up cannons with which to intimidate the pirates. With circular, consists of a stone staircase and drawbridge. To the left of the entrance is the descent to the deposit of powder, and the right find the climb to the esplanade of the slabs. Three iron cannons defending the coast, and could accommodate a garrison of twelve men in arms.
Today you can visit and inside are held several exhibitions and is also a tourist information center.
