The history of the castle
or tower
defense begins in
the fifteenth century with
the conquest of the
island by
the Spanish
crown,
becoming a
bastion to
defend the coast from frequent pirate
attacks Berber (North
African),
English and
French.
After the conquest, El
Cotillo acquired
great importance
as a natural
harbor for
trade orchilla,
cereals and
livestock. This
anchorage was
known since
1599 as
the Port of Roque. Beginning
in 1626 acquired the
name of Puerto
del Toston to
derive its
present name,
"El Cotillo"
from mid-twentieth
century.
This castle was
built on
the ruins of
the old castle defense
(Rico Roque), and
was created to defend
the port of
El Cotillo, which
was very important for
trade in cochineal,
grain and livestock.
The tower was built in
1700 with
stones from
a cave
near El
Cotillo. It
has a drawbridge
and at
the top were
set up cannons with
which to
intimidate the pirates. With circular,
consists of a stone staircase and
drawbridge. To
the left of the entrance
is the
descent to the deposit of powder, and the right
find the
climb to the esplanade of
the slabs.
