Fossils in Fuerteventura. Strombus Bobonius, Costa
Calma
Canary Islands are not
characterized by the abundance of fossils of animals and plants
that lived thousands or millions of years in this area. This is
because "youth" of the islands (20 million years for the
"oldest", Fuerteventura, and the volcanic islands. Of the islands that I know
(Tenerife, Lanzarote, La Gomera and Fuerteventura) Fuerteventura only
area I found a fossil of importance, and is on the east coast of
the island, a strip that goes from Caleta de Fuste to Esquinzo in there
is a rock stratum in the current coastline,
where these shells are a good size. The shells are called STROMBUS BOBONIUS, and
have a 100,000 to 180,000 years(Quaternary).
The
presence of these organisms tells
us that at that time, Fuerteventura weather was warmer and
wetter than at present (this mollusk lives in the Gulf
of Guinea). This site (in the town of MATAS BLANCAS), is
located about 2.5 kilometers before arriving in Costa Calma from
the north. It is just before the Old Fish Factory that looks to
the left of the FV-2. To enter, you must deviate by a dirt
track towards the sea, located just opposite the bus
stop, and that goes to some small houses. There is a monolith of
information from this site. Other interesting places to see
these collections of fossils are Oasis Beach Park in LaLajita,
or between Caleta de Fuste and Salinas del Carmen
