The Interpretation Centre of the Cueva
del Llano is located north of Villaverde, in the municipality
of La Oliva.
It is very educational and I recommend a visit.
This cave is a "Jameo" (volcanic tube) that has been
filled by large amounts of sediment
for thousands of years,
which has been a rich fossil record that helps us know how the
climate in Fuerteventura in ancient times. Before accessing the cave on a
visit with a guide who explains masterfully geology of
Fuerteventura, you should see the exhibit outside of the
building, where you can find very educational and
entertaining insight into the formation of Fuerteventura, on
the fauna of the island, and a clear explanation of how the
cave was formed to visit below. The visit to the cave itself is
not "spectacular" (has nothing to do for example with the Cueva
de los Verdes (GREENS CAVE), in neighboring Lanzarote), but
within its category and the tour guide, the
visit is enjoyable and short.
Curiously, one can note that in
this cave is a cave dweller: the Maioreus randoi, a kind of
small spider that is not anywhere in the world except in this
cave.
The
Interpretation Centre Cave Llano is
open Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00 to 18.00.
