Alongside Villaverde La Oliva and we
are one of the volcanoes that stand out in the landscape of Fuerteventura,
both for its crater which rises nearly 200 meters from its base,
for the great "badlands" which generated lava eruption. This is a simple trip,
lasting three hours, but in which there is a section "difficult"
due to the steep slopes of the volcano. I chose the "southern route", it
was the only one who knew (from the village of La Oliva), but I
imagine it will also be up for "east" (from Villaverde), or
the "northern" (from Lajares). From the center of La Oliva leaves a
dirt road that goes straight to the volcano. After traveling approximately
1.4 miles, you reach the entrance of a herd of goats at the base
of the volcano. Here you can park and went to the right the
stone wall that bounds the cattle farm about 400 meters to a
rocky area ("hornitos"). In this area where we turn to the
volcano, following the stone wall. (This area, depending on
where you upload), is somewhat complicated.
At
the end of the stone wall, we
reached the base of the cone of the volcano where there is a
path (in pretty bad shape), which goes "zig-zag" to the top, and
is an industrially exploited area where the
volcanic stone and the volcano and the material (stones and
cinder) is loose, so caution should be passing through here, as
the slope is very large and it is likely that you slip or fall). We take this road and continue the
climb to the top.
This volcano has two craters together and very well
preserved. E crater from the west is the largest and deepest.
From the top, we have a 360 º view of the entire area north of
the island (El Cotillo, Corralejo, Esmeralda, La Oliva,
Villaverde, Dunes of Corralejo, the island of Lobos, Lanzarote). One
of the best views of Fuerteventura ...
And it is perfectly around the volcano, "malpais" that
formed the lava expelled and has been colonized by fungi
and lichens and other native plants, which have given a
distinctive light green color.
In short, a great trip well worth the incredible views from the
top of the volcano.
